“American art has to be the result of a conjunction between the creative mechanism of the North and the creative power of the South coming from the traditional deep-rooted Southern Indian forms.”—Diego Rivera

Forum seeks submissions of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, photography, visual arts & video arts inspired by the themes portrayed in and evoked by Diego Rivera’s mural.

Diego Rivera painted this mural in front of a live audience at the Golden Gate International Exposition on San Francisco’s Treasure Island. The mural was planned around the dimensions of the Golden Gate Bridge, and Rivera and Frida Kahlo envisioned San Francisco as the place that would unify the Americas.

Rivera considered art a vehicle for the underclasses to have their political agenda brought to the public sphere. How does his opinion and art resonate with today’s artists, writers, and audiences?

Prizes

First place prize is a one-year membership to the SFMOMA.

First, second, and third place winners will be published on the Forum Blog website and will be considered for publication by the Forum staff in the Fall 2020 print issue of Forum Literary and Arts Magazine.
